Important Milestones

From 1981 - 1990

  • Fr.Gabriel was appointed as the Spiritual Guide and Counsellor of the Congregation by the Bishop on 10.08.1981.
  • A community was started on 01.08.1982 in Karungulam.
  • From 02.10.1982 onwards a community of Sisters were placed at the service of the Bishop’s House at Tuicorin.
  • The newly made Rules and Regulations and By-laws were came to action from 15.10.1982.
  • For retired Sisters a small chapel was constructed on 01.11.1982 in St. Joseph’s Charity Institute, Adaikalapuram.
  • A new agreement was made between St. Joseph’s Charity Institute and the Sacred Heart Sisters on 01.12.1982.
  • The Headquarters of the Congregation was functioned along with Novitiate at Innaciarpuram in Tuticorin from  01.12.1982.
  • To have separate Novitiate a piece of land was purchased at Rajapalayam in ThalamuthuNagar Parish on 12. 09. 1986. On 06.02.1987 the work of construction started.
  • A new community of Sisters was started at Sankarankudiyiruppu on 21.08.1988 in Sathankulam Vicariate of Tuticorin Diocese.
  • Community was started in M. Kottur in Kurukuchalai Vicariate on 03.07.1987 to teach in the School and for pastoral mission work.
  • The Congregation of the Sacred Heart Sisters put up a stall in the Vocation Exhibition on 27 and 28th December 1988.
  • A separate Novitiate blessed and started functioning from there from 02.02.1990.

From 1991 - 2000

  • The Sacred Heart Sisters adopted their Religious Habits from white sarees to saffron sarees from 26.06.1992. It was worn by twenty-five Sisters at first.
  • Thirty two tombs of the deceased Sisters were constructed and blessed at Adaikalapuram on 17.08.1992.
  • The congregation took  up the farm work at Puliyankulam on 01.12.1992 in the diocese of Tuticorin.
  • A new community was started in Keelavippar Parish on 17.10.1994. The Sisters were appointed as teachers in the school run by the Diocese.
  • Starting of a Matriculation School on 07.06.1995. Rev. Fr. Graziani from Italy generously helped to construct the School, which is known as Sacred Heart Matriculation School.
  •  Sisters began to render their services at philosophate in Karumathur Seminary from 31.o5 1996. 
  • A community was established at Nanguneri to take care of the hostel inmates of I.T.I Institute on 07.07.1997.
  • A new community started in the Archdiocese of Chieti, Vasto, Italy was a landmark event. The sisters work in a Montessory school in Ceremonseska from  19.12.1999.
  • A community was started at Loretto house, kodaikanal meant for temporary rest for the priests of the diocese of Tuticorin.

From 2001 - 2010

  • A dispensary was started at Vembur on 27.05.2001
  • In the diocese of Palayamkottai, the Congregation started (on 01.06.2002) a Home for the children, run by Palayamkottai Multipurpose Social Service Society, at Bharathi Nagar to shape their character.
  • In the same Archdiocese of Chieti –Vasto, another house was started in Francavilla to serve the elderly people on 17.06.2002.
  • The pastoral and mission work at Thalavaipuram at Kombady Parish was taken up on 18.08.2002
  • A community was established at Monteros in the Archdiocese of Chieti –Vasto to serve the elderly people on 08.05.2004
  • A decision was made to appoint a full time Vocation promoter in the fifth General Chapter. As a result a full time vocation promoter was appointed in June, 2005.
  • A community and a dispensary was started at Keezhavaippar on 14.08.2005 in  Tuticorin Diocese.
  • A dispensary was started at M. Kottur Parish in Kurukuchalai vicariate on 03.12.2007.

From 2011 - 2020

  • Our Congregation was legally registered with the Registrar of Societies in Tirunelveli under the name of Sisters of the Sacred Heart Charitable Society on 17.02.2011, with the Registration No. 19/2011.
  • In the Arch-diocese of Madurai, the Congregation took up (on 23.06.2011) the hostel responsibility in Nagamalai –Pudukottai where university students were lodged in order to counsel and guide them.
  • A new monthly news bulletin, named “Ithaiyasaral” meaning sharing from the heart, was published from 01.07.2011.
  • From 23.11.2011 the Registered Society obtained from the government 12A. It is an exemption from taxation for all amounts collected during the year and a maximum of 85% was to be spent within the same financial year to avoid any taxation. This was very important to be exempted from the system of taxation by the Government irrespective of the total volume of money.
  • A community was started at Reggio Milia in the diocese of Vicenza near Padua to do pastoral work in the parish and to take care of Kindergarten children and the home for the elderly.
  • On 24.02.2012 an alternative medical treatment centre at Fatima Nagar in Tuticorin was started.
  • It was decided in the sixth General Chapter to revise both the history and the Rules and Regulations of the Congregation. The new edition was published with the approval by the Bishop Most Rev. Dr.YvonAmbroise on 08.05.2012.
  • A new Habit of rose colour Saree was given to all sisters and all were advised to change over to it on 20.04.2014.
  • Tthe Novitiate of the Congregation was shifted to Nazareth, in the Diocese of Thiruchirapalli.
  • At Vallioor in the Diocese of Tuticorin, an alternative medical treatment centre        was started on 15.07.2015.
  • Two Sisters were sent to work with Jesuits in Loyola College in the Diocese of Salem on 22.06.2016.
  • A new community was started at Sankarankudiyiruppu at Chidambarapuram parish in the Diocese of Tuticorin along with a dispensary.
  • On 08.09.2016 an alternative medical treatment centre was started at   Vadakkankulam parish.
